Enabling circular economy approaches for delivering 21st century sustainable buildings in regional areas.

An update on the collaboration with the Regional Circularity Cooperative and COX Architecture through an industry-focused PhD project aimed at addressing key challenges in the sustainable design and construction sector Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC). This collaborative effort brings together academic expertise and industry insights to drive innovation and deliver real-world impact.

The project is titled “Circular economy approaches for delivering 21st Century sustainable buildings,” focuses on Living Building Certification and the implications of its stringent requirements on the uptake of high-performing sustainable construction projects in a regional NSW setting. It thereby seeks to capture key learnings in the design and construction phase of these buildings, that will assist in developing strategies for the successful delivery of circular construction projects in the future whilst diminishing its perceived challenges. This research will be conducted in conjunction with the development of the National Circularity Centre (NCC) in the Bega Valley.

By leveraging the University of Wollongong’s renowned expertise in sustainable built environment research and Cox Architecture’s industry leadership in Living Building Certified design, this project epitomises a collaborative approach that bridges the gap between academia and industry.

“Translating decades of academic research into practical sustainable building outcomes is the DNA of the Sustainable Buildings Research Centre.  This project does this and gives us a rich data set to advance the understanding of how to deliver the most sustainable buildings in the world.” Timothy McCarthy and Samin Marzban.

“Participation in this industry linked PhD project provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the forefront of sustainable building research. Particularly given the projects regional NSW setting, I’m excited to really delve into some of the key challenges that we are likely to face in working toward circularity in the construction industry moving forward.” Lachlan Booth

This project will move the conversation from “why is sustainability so hard to deliver” to achieving a new norm for the built environment.  The project will produce a detailed “How To” guide for the delivery of sustainable buildings that meet the most advanced performance criteria.  It will cement the Bega Valley as an inspirational world leader in circular economy.
