Social Cohesion, Racism and a Framework for Australia
We are pleased to announce a collaboration with the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute and Monash University on an Australian Government Department of Education National Industry PhD project to address social cohesion in Australia.
This project will critically review Australian anti-racism approaches to develop a new framework to address social cohesion in a culturally diverse society. By understanding the fears behind perpetrators of discrimination, it will enhance antiracism strategies and foster more effective responses. The project will also include two case studies on discrimination within broad cultural groups.
Monash University’s Perspective:
The National Industry PhD project unites leading Monash Arts scholars in cultural diversity, intercultural interactions, discrimination, and social cohesion with the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute to tackle a critical social issue. Lead PhD supervisor Professor Dharma Arunachalam, Faculty of Arts, Monash University, states:
“Effectively addressing discrimination and racism requires understanding both the victims’ experiences and the perpetrators’ motivations. A comprehensive approach must also consider discrimination within cultural groups. The project’s breadth and depth will help develop a new framework to combat discrimination and strengthen social cohesion in Australia.”
Scanlon Foundation Research Institute:
The Scanlon Foundation Research Institute is excited to partner with Monash University through the National Industry PhD Program. This project, with its focus on addressing the behaviours of perpetrators of racism across the population including the general population and from an intra and intercultural perspective, is vital for strengthening social cohesion. It maximises the Institute’s ongoing work and contributes valuable research to Australian society.
Student Perspective:
Anthea Hancocks, PhD Candidate at Monash, shares her excitement:
“This project is intended to revisit the approach of existing anti-racism strategies through improving our understanding of perpetrators of race-based discrimination with two areas of investigation. The first explores the drivers of such behaviours amongst the Anglo/European population and then investigates discrimination within selected cultural communities. The research aims to inform national and state-based frameworks to reduce race-based discrimination in Australia. This award recognises the Government’s commitment to this work and could set a new benchmark for anti-racism strategies nationally and internationally.”
