Development of new drug candidates against brain tumours

We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Syntara (ASX: SNT) on an industry-focused PhD project aimed at addressing key challenges in the brain cancer drug discovery. This collaborative effort brings together academic expertise and industry insights to drive innovation and deliver real-world impact.

Project Overview: Our project, titled “Development of new drug candidates against brain tumours,” focuses on targeting quiescent glioblastoma cells that evade standard-of-care treatments and cause tumour regrowth. Novel inhibitors emerging from this project will not only offer chemical tools to deepen our understanding of quiescent glioblastoma cells but also serve as lead molecules for the development of innovative treatments against glioblastoma, and potentially other cancers.

Collaborative Approach: Leveraging the University of Sydney renowned expertise in dissecting molecular drivers of brain tumours and Syntara’s industry leadership in drug discovery and development, this project epitomises a collaborative approach that bridges the gap between academia and industry.

Value for Industry:
“This collaborative project with high calibre researchers Lenka Munoz and team at USyd has started off with great spirit and energy! In many ways the project is in our sweet spot – we are highly motivated to help make a difference by finding the best molecules to answer fundamental scientific questions, with the aim to develop effective drugs helping people affected by such devastating disease.” – Dieter HamprechtSyntara

Value for Academia:
“This project reflects the University of Sydney’s commitment to advancing the frontiers of medical research. Partnering with industry at the basic science stage is truly exciting and crucial for more rapidly delivering outcomes that can transform the lives of brain cancer patients and pave the way for a better future.” Lenka Munoz – Academic Supervisor

Student Perspective:
“As a mid-career scientist with over 15 years of experience in organic synthesis at Syntara I hit the ground running, excited by the opportunity presented by the National Industry PhD Program. It is a privilege to carry out my PhD project in the context of an amazing team, under the guidance of Professor Munoz. I look forward to growing my skillset while providing a strong contribution to making this project a success.” @Wenbin Zhou – PhD Candidate USyd
