Decommissioning of mixed-media industrial equipment and opportunities for plastic waste upcycling and recycling in Australia
Monash University and Woodside Energy have commenced a groundbreaking project under the National Industry PhD Program.
Project Overview:
Transforming Polymer Recycling for Industrial Decommissioned Equipment
Under the supervision of Dr Dr. Erin Brodie, Dr. Jenny ZHOU, Lendyn Philip and Dr. Aaron Tung, National Industry PhD Candidate Gabrielle Newman will dive into uncharted territory with a project aimed at identifying and assessing innovative pathways for polymer recycling in industrial decommissioned equipment.
This isn’t just research; it’s a mission to create a circular materials network across Australia.

Creating a Sustainable Future
The project’s goal is ambitious yet crucial: to establish a network connecting scalable plastic recycling technologies from both university and industry research to industrial waste streams and material processing partners. The outcome? A powerful network diverting over 50,000 tonnes of material away from landfills, turning them into new products and fuels.
Why It Matters
This project isn’t just about research; it’s about reshaping Australia’s approach to polymer processing. By maximising novel technologies, we’re creating a sustainable ecosystem that benefits both the environment and industry.
